Snider Basin / South Piney Mine
John Brady and later John Ray had a coal mine on Darby Mountain.
Ollie
Nielson
worked for Ray in 1918 or 1919. Steve Daniels also worked for Ray when
he and A.R. Daniels were co-partners in the Schneider Basin Coal Co. in
1926. John Ray broke his leg at this mine and set it himself by tying it
to a chair and pulling. At one time, Shorty Kleinstick and Edwin Shooter
had a mine on Darby. In 1937, Ollie Nielson opened a mine at about the
same location. The coal was hauled by truck for use at the Charlie Budd
#1 Well at the Corder Place after it blew in. Some reports indicate that
Chuck Davis and Paul Virostko also worked here.
